The Chevrolet Malibu May Stand The Test Of Time
The Chevy Malibu Isn’t Ready To Retire
Within the last decade, there’s been a considerable emphasis on SUVs in North America, leaving quite a bit of the previously cherished sedans or hatchbacks in limbo…except for the Chevy Malibu. Word on the motorized street is that this mid-sized vehicle could be riding on American roads for at least one more generation.
One should know that this rumor comes after previous gossip about the Malibu car being discontinued in 2024. Supposedly the car blog site, GM Authority has a source within the company confirming that a new generation is scheduled for 2025 and might ride along an amended version of its current platform. Another car site, Motor1, reached out to Chevrolet for possible word on the suggestion, but their questions currently haven’t been answered.
While the car manufacturer hasn’t confirmed nor debunked these rumors, there appears to be some compelling evidence to support the Malibu’s continued lifespan. Although we’re still on the lookout for the automaker’s final sales figures for 2022, through October, the vehicle’s sales were up an astonishing 148 percent compared to 2021. Chevrolet said that 79,799 units were sold through the first three quarters of the year, a significant increase over the 39,376 Malibu sedans sold for all of 2021.
To compare, the Malibu sedan has outsold several fan-favored SUVs by the bowtie company, such as the Blazer, Traverse, Trailblazer, Suburban, and Tahoe. It’s also outranking the Chevy Colorado SUV. Despite this, sales for this truck could see a jump next year owing to the new-generation model released last July. Moving past the restrictions of its parent company, General Motors (GM), the mid-sized Malibu is still miles away as the best-selling sedan, as this credit is bestowed upon the Toyota Camry. This car was successful in achieving 214,403 sales through October 2022.
Considering that the Malibu continues to perform well for second-generation using an amended version of its current platform, it would offer internal combustion power. On the other hand, like with other automakers, GM has shied away from promoting gasoline-powered cars these days, as it’s centering its efforts on its Ultium-powered electric vehicles. Then, with states like California and Oregon aiming to ban new internal-combustion car sales by 2035, there will be a limited time for another gasoline-powered generation.
The Chevy Malibu nameplate has an extensive history in the car industry, dating back to 1964. After a bit of a halt for most of the 1980s and 1990s, it came back strong in 1997 and has been a considerable part of the automaker’s sedan lineup ever since. The current generation of the Malibu dates back to 2016, with a mid-cycle revamp hitting in 2019. Some of the most impressive features of the 2023 Malibu include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Keyless Entry Keypad, Automatic Parking Assist, Wireless charging, Teen Driver, and Buckle to Drive. These niceties can be found in the current model for a starting MSRP of $24,700 (plus destination fee).
